How to Detect Diseases Associated with Bleeding Gums

Posted in Blog, Dental Care, Health | March 22nd, 2011

We should not be annoyed with bleeding gums but rather be alarmed by it because it may be the start of something serious. When our gums start bleeding, it may not mean more than annoyance when caused by several of the diseases associated with it.

For instance, the serious illness and bleeding gums are closely associated. When tissues in the gums become infected and it is not treated properly, it will lead to this disease and will result to weaker if not loss of teeth. The damage can reach up to an irreversible point when the teeth can be lost permanently. There are many factors leading to this disease and one of these is plaque. When there is plaque in excess amount, a good deal of germs that may cause the infection and irritating materials may end up in the teeth that will lead to damage in the structure and its mineral content. Periodontitis happens when there is already infection caused by the excessive formation of plaque in the teeth. This results to hardening which causes the teeth to lose their surrounding tissues. This can be harmful unless properly treated on time.

Periodontitis has few symptoms and it so happens that many individuals seek treatment only after the disease is already in its progressing stages. These symptoms may include redness or bleeding of the gums while brushing the teeth; while using dental floss and when biting into hard food. The disease can also be suspected when there is gum swelling that recurs; halitosis, or bad breath; and when there is a taste of metal that persists in the mouth. Gingival recession can also be observed and this results in apparent lengthening of the teeth, which may have been caused by frequent use of stiff tooth brush.

With periodontitis, deep spaces between the teeth and the gums can also be seen; where these sites are exactly where the teeth has been acted upon by the enzymes that destroys collagen; known as collagenases. Later, loose teeth can be experienced.

Another disease associated with bleeding gums is gingivitis. The gums become inflamed due to improper oral hygiene and the lack of proper care for the teeth. This disease is commonly caused by formation of plaque in the teeth that is why it is also called plaque-induced gingivitis. The symptoms of this disease show in the way the gum tissue manifests such as bright reddish or purplish gums; gums that become tender and are painful to the touch; and bleeding gums or gums that bleed after brushing.

People should be wary of these diseases caused by bleeding gums because the inflammation and damage of the tissue may be painless and will lead one to assume that the disease is insignificant. Therefore, make sure to consult the doctor when the first signs and symptoms of the disease are felt.
